Keep A Notebook With Interior Design Ideas
It can be mind boggling when you are building a house and you have so many decisions to make. New home construction can be very stressful and overwhelming. When we built ours, I had to keep a notebook to keep everything straight. I had definite ideas about how I wanted my house to end up.
Many hours were spent looking through home decorating magazines. Whenever I found a look that I wanted, I would tear out the page and put it in my notebook. This helps so much. Not only does it keep you occupied during the beginning stages of the new home building process, but it makes shopping so much easier. You have already thought everything through. It's just a matter of finding what you want. Much better than starting out blindly.
Staying organized will get you through the process with fewer headaches, making it all worthwhile. The end result is a custom built home that has your personality all over it. It will truly feel like home because you took the time and energy in the planning stages to make it custom to your needs.
Painting Interior Walls
Have one page in your notebook dedicated to paint chips. Figuring out how to choose paint colors isn't as hard as it seems. Choosing paint at this stage is a matter of playing around with paint chips in your notebook.
Once you have one room color definitely decided on, the paint chip can go in here. This makes deciding on the rest of the rooms easier. You might have a color idea in mind, but might not be sure of the tone. Matching it up with the other paint chips will give you a better idea. If you picked a louisburg green for the study, a toned down sage green, and want red for the dining room - you will want a toned down color there as well. A shy cherry would be better than a tomato red. You don't want one room to be soothing and the one next to it to be shocking. It's good to keep the same tone throughout the same level of the house. I had all muted tones on my main level, even though I had red in my dining room - it was toned down. Our upper level belonged to the kids and was all bright tones. Putting the paint chips next to each other in the notebook, according to how they will fall in the house, helps you to see how it will be walking through the house.
Designing Rooms
Keep a separate notebook page for each room in the house. For the master bathroom for instance, keep a separate page or share with the master bedroom. Again, put a paint chip on this page. If you are going to have tile, add a tile sample. You might start out with a picture from a magazine as an idea and then when you decide on an actual tile add that. The same holds true for faucets, cabinets, cabinet hardware, lighting, etc.. Start out with magazine pictures and end up with the actual picture sample. Watch it all come together and make sure everything blends together.
In the great room, you will have more choices to make. Look at furniture layout in magazine pictures and then look at your space. When you find something that will work for you, tear it out and put it in your notebook. If you have a fireplace, look at all of the different mantel choices. Find what you like best. A study can be a challenge to decorate. Again, look at pictures and compare to your space. Keep filling your notebook with ideas. I even saw a picture, in a magazine, of a carpet runner going upstairs that was black with white dots. I loved it and went with actual carpet that was black with white dots and we had the wood on each side of the steps so it looked like a carpet runner. Most likely I wouldn't have thought of that if I hadn't been looking for ideas.
Kitchens are probably the most fun to decorate and the most expensive to redecorate. So, you want to get it right the first time. Take special care when picking out all of the elements for this room. I was told by a kitchen planner to pick a darker wood floor than my cabinet color. I didn't like the idea. We chose a beautiful Brazilian Cherry floor which was very warm and I matched it up with the cabinets exactly. I took an actual floor sample with us to the cabinet store. Luckily, I was very happy with the choice. If you match samples carefully, it can work. When doing your kitchen, you will want to make sure that your cabinet material, whether laminate or granite, matches well with your cabinets, flooring, and appliances. Seeing samples of everything on one page really helps to give you an idea.
