Gifts Kids Can Make

When my kids were young I used to run a day care business in my home. One of the things I loved to do with the kids was crafts. It was a great way for them to occupy their time and they always felt good about what they accomplished. Crafts that they could take home and give to mom as a gift were always the most special. I can still remember the excitement that they all had when they made something that they just new their mother was going to love!

Craft sticks are a great supply to have on hand. There are a myriad of different things that kids can make. The recipe card holders are one great example.  Not only are they easy to do but they are a functional item that mom will treasure for years!

I like to add some buttons and beads for a nice artsy embellishment. The simple beading and twisting are also easy for kids to do and they have fun doing it.  This additional technique gives the kids some more variety in their project, other than just gluing.  When they are finished, they take great pride in their work of art!

Before starting, this is what you'll need:

  • 30 jumbo craft sticks
  • Elmers glue
  • wax paper
  • beading wire
  • large button
  • several small beads
  • recipe cards or index cards

Recipe Card Holder Instructions

First you will need to protect your work surface with wax paper. This craft can be a little messy, especially with little fingers, and the wax paper keeps the finished product from sticking to your surface.

Start by gluing eight sticks together side by side (see photo one).

Now do the same thing with four sticks and set those aside.

Stack and glue eight sticks together, one on top of the other (see photo two). Do this one more time so that you have two stacks.

Take one of these stacks and glue it along the long side of your base (photo one) as shown in photo three. Glue the other stack along the opposite side.

Now take one craft stick at glue it sideways to the bottom edge. This will be the bottom of the recipe card holder.

Take the four sticks that are glued together and glue them on top of the two stacks and bottom edge so that you now have a container (photo four).

Thread two long pieces of wire through a large button (photo five).

Begin string beads through the wire, twisting the wire as you go between each bead for spacing (photo six). I use a round nose pliers to do this but small paint brushes work great for kids.

Hot glue your button embellishment to the front of the recipe card holder.

Cut another long piece of wire. Wrap it around one end of a craft stick. Make a small twist and start beading and twisting. Wrap the other end of the wire around the other end of the craft stick (photo seven).

Hot glue the stick to the back of the recipe card holder. It is now ready to hang!
